Niger State Government has restated its commitment to boost food production in the State through the establishment of a Food Processing Company.

The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Abubakar Usman disclosed this at the stakeholders meeting on Bobi Grazing Reserve held in his Office.

Alhaji Usman revealed that the setting up of the Company would unlock the immense potential of the Livestock industry, attract investments, and promote job creation in the State.

According to the SSG, “the Food Processing Company will aggregate; process and package farm produce to create business activities, boost farming and improve food security”.

He further explained that the present administration’s commitment to Agriculture is very strategic knowing fully that the sector is the only sure way for food security, employment generation, and raw materials for industrialization, hence the need for the Government to reach out to every opportunity in order to achieve the set objectives and goals.

The SSG reiterated that the Government is committed to actualizing Bobi Grazing Reserve located in Mariga and Mashegu Local Government Areas of the State despite Bandits incursion.

Alhaji Usman assured the Government’s commitment and determination to put in place high-level security measures that will safeguard the Reserve and private sector investments.

The SSG received updates from the Consultant of the Reserve who is also the Emir of Muri, Alhaji Abbas Tafida, Officials from CBN, Friesland Campina Wamco, Chi Limited, Hail Consortium, Neon Dairies Plc, and Iris Dairies.

Federal Government to Commence Partial Commercialization of River Basins across the Country.

As part of efforts to enhance Food Production and to boost Economic Development of Nigeria, the Federal Government said it will commence the partial commercialization of River Basins across the Country.

The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Professor Joseph Utsev disclosed this when he paid a visit to the Tiga Dam built by the Former Governor of Kano State and Police Commissioner, Audu Baki, some 50 years ago.

It should be noted that the over 50 year old Dam which has Canals and small Dams linked up to Lake Chad trough Kamadugu River Basin in Yobe State, was constructed on 1.4 Billion cubic Water Capacity, and was done on some 5 Million combined Kano/Jigawa Population then.

The Minister expressed serious concerns about the illegal tapping of the Dams by some irrigation Farmers across the multiple Canals of the Tiga Dam.

According to him, “We cannot neglect these set of Farmers because we have to fully document and bring them into the partial Commercialization of the River Basin so that there would be full irrigation Farming.

“The main purpose of constructing the Dam is for Irrigation Farming, flood control and energy generation, and yet 50 years later, the Dam was not fully utilized which calls for the needed Commercialization.

“The government is ever ready to partner commercial farmers who are interested in boosting food production for us to have full Food security in the Country and even allow exportation of the Products.

“They should come and register with us, and we will allow them to tap water from the Dam.”

He however lamented that, farmers are tapping water illegally from the canals and this according to him will have negative impact.

NIGER STATE GOVERNMENT ROLLS OUT MEASURES FOR THE DISTRIBUTION OF N5.25 BILLION WORTH OF PALLIATIVES.

*** DECLARES THREE DAYS PUBLIC HOLIDAY FOR DISTRIBUTION

Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago has declared Wednesday, Thursday and Friday next week as public holidays to allow for the effective distribution of palliatives to residents across all the 25 Local Government Areas of the State.

The Governor in a maiden Press Conference held at the Government House Minna explained that the state government augmented N250 million to the N5 billion palliative given to the state.

Below are the highlights of the modalities adopted for distribution:

N2 billion cash received so far from the Federal government.

All the Wards in Suleja, Chanchaga, Bida and Kontagora Local Governments are to have N20 million per ward.

All the Wards in the remaining 21 Local Government Areas of the State will get 10 million Naira each.

Traditional Institutions to get N80 million.

Internally Displaced Persons to get N75 million.

Logistics and Organized Labour, to gulp N110 million

Political parties to get N150 million.

All the money is to hit the Local Government council Account by Monday next week.

the cash will be injected into the local markets in the state.

Five trucks of Rice will be distributed to each Ward of the 25 Local Government Areas.

40,000 bags of Maize is still anticipated from the Federal government and the state government will add 10,000 bags to make it 50,000 bags for distribution to all the polling units across the state.

The palliatives are not free as the State and Local Governments will pay back 58% of the N5 billion in 20 months while the Federal government will take 42%.

Local Government and Ward Committees are to decide what food items to buy depending on the needs of their people.

Standing Committees comprising Former and serving public office holders are to ensure effective and efficient distribution of the palliatives in their respective Constituencies.

Also to cushion the effect of fuel subsidy removal, Governor Umaru Bago disclosed that some steps taken by the state government to ease movement of goods and services .

200 CNG Luxurious Buses will be made available to provide free public transportation to all students and pupils in public schools.

Civil Servant will also benefit at a discounted rate .

100 of the Buses are to ply the Suleja to Abuja axis.

50 Buses to ply Minna and 50 to other Local Government Areas.

On Agriculture,
Directives have been given to the Ministries of Lands and Agriculture to provide 10,000 hectares of arable land in every Local Government.

By December 2023, 250,000 arable lands should be cleared to boost national policy on food security.

Farm Machinery to be provided

500,000 youths are to be employed in the pilot scheme in Agricultural activities.

400,000 women are to be employed as pickers of Shea nuts.

On Education;
Payment of bursary to students is to be revived.

Governor Umaru Bago used the medium to appeal to Nigerlites to be patient as his administration remains committed to serving them better.

He however warned that anyone who is found wanting in the distribution of the palliatives will be jailed to serve as a deterrent to others.

NIGER STATE GOVERNMENT TO PARTNER INDIAN GOVERNMENT ON AGRICULTURAL TECHNOLOGY AND TECHNICAL KNOW-HOW ON HEALTH

Governor of Niger State, Rt. Hon. Mohammed Umaru Bago has visited the Indian High Commissioner, Gangadharan Balasubramanian to seek partnership with the Indian Government in a mutually beneficial relationship.

The Governor was in the company of his Deputy, Comrade Yakubu Garba, Secretary to the State Government, Abubakar Usman, Chief of Staff, Abdullahi Usman Gbatamangi and some other government functionaries at the High Commission of India, Abuja.

Governor Umaru Bago explained his administration’s desire to tap from the Indian government in the areas of Agricultural Technology, particularly for Millet irrigation farming as it is one of the largest producers of Millet.

He also discussed how the Indian government would assist the Niger State government in securing a loan for the purchase of tractors, improved seedlings, water pumping machines, and harvesters among other farm implements to lunch the state into mechanized farming, making the best of its arable land.

The Governor also spoke on his intention to build one of the best teaching hospitals in Nigeria to cater for the health needs of the citizens in the state and beyond.

He said in this regard, the Indian government will be of immense benefit in terms of teaching and training.

Responding, the Indian High Commissioner, Gangadharan Balasubramanian expressed the readiness of the Indian government to mutually collaborate with the Niger State Government.

He said the Indian and Nigerian governments have an existing bilateral relationship and loans are available from the Indian government which can be repaid in ten years, hence the Niger State government can take advantage of it.
